Home Church has many opportunities for members to show their love for Jesus by using the gifts that each of us has been blessed with. We have various ways to share our faith through the following evangelism/discipleship ministries. If you are interested in learning more about or participating in any of these ministries, please contact the church office by email or phone Jane Shore at 336-722-6171; she will have the appropriate person contact you. Volunteers are always welcomed and needed.
Candle Tea – The Women's Fellowship sponsors the annual Candle Tea, held the first two weeks in Advent. This ministry involves many volunteers and is enjoyed by thousands of community visitors each year. Church members share their Moravian history and faith with singing, candle-making, coffee & sugar cake. The Candle Tea concludes with the Salem Putz and hearing the beautiful Christmas Story while viewing the Nativity. Proceeds are shared with community missions and agencies.
Christmas Eve Lovefeasts – Home Church holds four Lovefeast Services for the community on Christmas Eve. Each Lovefeast is a beautiful worship service that includes coffee and buns, music, singing of Christmas Carols and a lighted candle for each person attending. The offering received at these services is shared among local agencies that serve those in crisis situations.
Church Interpretation – Church Interpretation is a gesture of hospitality. The sanctuary is open from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday from March through November. Home Church members welcome visitors into our place of worship and speak informally about the Moravian Church past and present while describing architectural features of the building. It is also an opportunity to share the customs, practices, and ministries of our church. Many of the visitors are persons touring Old Salem.
Easter Sunrise Service – The Easter Sunrise service, sponsored by 13 Moravian Churches known as Salem Congregation, begins outside Home Moravian Church each Easter morning with the Easter Morning Liturgy and is concluded in God's Acre, the nearby Moravian graveyard. In the early morning hours Moravian Bands play throughout the city and then come together and play for the Sunrise Service announcing to the world that “the Lord has risen.”
Music@ Home Concerts – A variety of fine musical concerts are held throughout the year usually on Sunday afternoons. They are offered as a gift to the community and are free to the public. Most concerts are held at the church sanctuary
Salem Academy and College – Home Church provides an annual “Welcome Back to School” meal for Salem Academy students at the beginning of the school year and a Christmas Dinner for college students before their holiday break. Members also provide local hospitality for international students who come from a great distance to be at Salem, and respond to specific financial needs where helpful. A task force is currently looking at ways to further strengthen the relationship.
Special Lovefeasts – Members and pastors hold special Lovefeasts/Worship Services during the year, especially during the month of December. Guests are encouraged to join in singing and to participate in the service. These services are held at hospitals, assisted living facilities and at other special group locations.
