Fulfilling Christ's call to love God, live in community, and serve our neighbor

Home Moravian's structural history was always a passion of the late Arthur Spaugh, a lifelong Moravian and Home Church member. For years Arthur, who was also a former president of Old Salem Inc., gave fascinating history tours of the church. He and videographer Mark Wright, with the help of several others, created this video version of the tour, first screened at Wednesday Night Fellowship in February 2017.

David W. Graf, a nationally recognized expert in antique tower clocks, came to Winston-Salem in late 2016 to perform maintenance on Home Church's clock. Graf marveled at the unique and special features of our clock, and his comments are captured in this video. The clock was built in Germany and shipped in 1791 to Salem, where it was first installed in a tower. It was moved to the new Sanctuary building in 1800. When it was made, the clock had only an hour hand and mechanism. After it was moved to the church, Johann Ludwig Eberhardt, a Salem clockmaker and metal crafter, created an 84-inch (circumference) minute wheel, new hour and minute hands, and an ingenious bell-striking mechanism, which Graf describes in detail. The clock still operates mechanically as it did when it was installed, and must be wound by hand every day. And yes, that's the band you hear in the background, playing Christmas music outside.

Paul Myers retired in August 2016 after almost 25 years of service at Home Moravian Church. In the video below, he shares one of the responsibilities that he enjoyed the most – attending to the church's clock, built in 1791 and upgraded in 1801-1806. This video was first shown at Wednesday Night Fellowship in February 2017.
