The Moravian Church, historically called the Unitas Fratrum or Unity, is composed of 17 self-sustaining Provinces and eight mission Provinces. Locations include South Africa, Tanzania, Nicaragua, Europe and North America. Originating from Herrnhut in Saxony, Germany, in the 1730s, lay and ordained men and women began their mission work, starting these provinces throughout the world.

In various places workers established churches, schools, orphanages and medical facilities. Outreach continues today, along with the worship and nurturing of the congregations. Each province is self-governing in most matters. However, all stand together under the guidance of Unity Synods (held about every seven years) and a Unity Board.
